In India like the western countries there are many funding sources for research in medicine, technology, social sciences etc. The funding is meant to assist the researcher or the students for purchase of utilities of research like equipment, books, chemicals, staff etc.
Further funding is also given to assist in travel at national and also international level. To enhance awareness among the people grants are also given away to organize conferences or seminars to qualified institutes or scientists.
Taking a step further funds are also given to assist in application for patents. In-return the only expectation from these funding bodies is to utilize the funds for the said purpose effectively and bring out publications or results of considerate value to the society.
The government of India has enhanced the budget for the funding bodies in the recent years to enhance research in science, technology and medicine. The major funding bodies include
- COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. (CSIR)
- INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH. (ICMR)
- DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (DST)
- DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY. (DBT)
- UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION. (UGC)
- ALL INDIA COUNCIL OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION. (AICTE)
- DEPARTMENT OF ATOMIC ENERGY (DAE)
- DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS. (DOE)
- DEPARTMENT OF NON CONVENTIONAL ENERGY. (DNES)
- DEPARTMENT OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. (DSIR)
COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. (CSIR). http://csirhrdg.nic.in/
One of the oldest funding bodies with many institutions directly under it. As the name indicates, the funding is given to research in science, technology and few areas of medicine. The person requesting for grants should be working in India in any recognized institute or in institutes directly under it like IICTs, CDRI, NBRI, IITR etc.
The funding for research is limited to few millions. (like not more than 5 million rupees). But it gives funds to encourage even young scientists and researchers at all levels. For most young researcher involved in science and technology, CSIR is the first option to think of.
INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH. (ICMR). http://www.icmr.nic.in/
