This is not an easy task to even those whose mother tongue is english and exposed to english speaking society in daily life. One has to put some extra effort if they are desirous to improve their writing skill. English writing skill finds its use for proper presentation of knowledge in written competitive exams like civil services, literature degree exams, during schooling graduation etc., in a professional and corporate deals to give a presentation or to communicate in written form like in email writing etc..
Tips to improve Writing Skills in English
Reading: Learn the skill by reading english books written especially by authors recognized in english literature. Read magazines, journals published in English. Listen to english news in television, radio etc.
Speaking : Try to habituate to speak in english with better vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation. This seems a bit confusing but talking and listening will feed the mind with the language requirements and the same are put on paper when you write in english. So spoken english skills are also important and have influence on writing skills in english.
If you are very young or you are interested in improving english writing skills of your children, it is best to start at very early age of their schooling. Because many words, vocabulary, sentence formation, handwriting style form a memory in a fixed style and always keep influencing their skill in future. It can’t be changed so easily just as one finds difficult to change their hand writing after growing up. Hence it is better to cultivate good reading and writing skills in english since childhood.
Hand writing: Many of us value a good handwriting as it is impressive and attractive to read. Even in exams, a student with good hand writing scores better than those without good hand writing of same caliber. So it is important to have a good handwriting as an accessory for good writing skills in english. This hand writing has to be practiced since childhood and can’t be easily altered during adult life.
The attractiveness in hand writing is not limited to just the appearance of letters but also the spacing in between words, in between lines, use of para graphs etc. The writing should preferably be easy to read without stress.
Grammar: This is important for especially those in literature and busyness field compared to those in science and technology fields. One has to be clear with present, past and future tenses, participles etc. Be aware of simple rules like capitalizing the starting letter of all the nouns Viz. names of person, animal, place etc. Again in using indefinite articles i.e A & An, one needs to be careful. “A” has to be used to denote singulars of words starting with consonants and “An” has to be used to denote singular words starting with vowels, viz A, E, I, O, U.
Punctuation marks: Next one has to be careful with punctuation marks used i.e full stop (.) comma (,) hyphen (-), exclamation (!) apostrophe (‘) question mark (?) etc.. Punctuations organize the structure of any sentence and miss use or non-use of punctuation gives different meaning of the sentence than the intended one.
